NZ vs IND 1st T20I: Jetlagged India Bring Back Bhuvneshwar

NZ vs IND 1st T20I in Christchurch: jetlagged India, one training session and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return after four years. Team news, form and key facts.

India and New Zealand begin a five-match T20I series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, with India arriving on a tight turnaround after a long flight. The NZ vs IND 1st T20I starts at 8pm local time (12:30pm IST), and the 36-year-old seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to play his first India game since November 2022.

It matters because India get one training session before a first game in conditions they rarely see, against a home side with a deep pace attack. The series is also the first big test for captain Shreyas Iyer and for a selection call that brought back a bowler many had written off.

NZ vs IND 1st T20I: India land late and play at once

According to Cricinfo’s preview by Matt Roller, India face the same scenario they met on their last tour of the country, with a longer journey and more jetlag, against what the site calls a much stronger opponent. The site says teams “grit their teeth”, get what sleep and fluids they can, use one training session and get on with it.

The calendar has not helped. India’s Asian Games gold medal campaign in Japan ended on October 3, the home series against the West Indies began three days later in Lucknow, and the decider was washed out in Bengaluru on October 17. That series finished 2-2.

Cricinfo adds that landing and playing almost at once is harder in New Zealand than elsewhere. The distance, the rarity of Indian tours there, and the heavy winds, drop-in pitches and oddly shaped grounds all play a part.

India are also without Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya for the T20Is. Yahoo Sports described the tourists as having one training session, no Bumrah, no Pandya and a long flight behind them.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return after four years

Bhuvneshwar was recalled for the five-match series at 36. He last played for India in November 2022. That final appearance also came in a T20I series in New Zealand. His last T20I figures were 0-35 from four overs against New Zealand in Napier.

The recall rests on his recent club form. He took 28 wickets in 16 games at an economy rate of 7.95 in IPL 2026 and helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru defend their title. The Free Press Journal counts 45 wickets across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Both captains have spoken about him. Cricinfo carried Mitchell Santner’s view under the headline “Bhuvi will love these conditions in New Zealand”. Iyer, in the same site’s preview, said Bhuvneshwar “knows how to dominate”, according to the sub-heading on the page.

The selectors have not explained the choice in public. A report said the selection committee had issued no statement on the specific reasons. His IPL numbers are the clearest evidence on offer.

Team news and likely selections

India’s main problem is the balance of the XI. Their spin-bowling all-rounders may be less effective away from Asia, and India could leave out Naman Dhir, who impressed against the West Indies, to fit in both Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube.

There is a second decision in the bowling. Bhuvneshwar is expected to play, while a fit-again Varun Chakaravarthy could miss out if the team management picks a third seamer in Prince Yadav. Cricinfo’s squad page lists Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav among the other bowlers, with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma in the batting group.

New Zealand have more options than they need. Cricinfo says they will have three spin options despite the absence of Mark Chapman, because captain Santner is one and Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips can both make the XI as batters. The home seam group on the squad list includes Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne and Blair Tickner.

Cricinfo also notes that New Zealand supporters get a rare look at Finn Allen at home. Allen is in the hosts’ squad alongside Devon Conway, Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell.

Conditions at Hagley Oval

The forecast is dry. Rain is unlikely during the match, though local conditions can change. The evening will be cold, though. Temperatures are likely to drop by the 8pm start.

That favours the bowlers early on. The surface is expected to help fast bowlers in the first overs, when the new ball can move. Yahoo Sports gives the venue’s T20I record as 19 matches, with an average first-innings score of 159 and 10 wins by sides bowling first.

Dew could matter in the second innings, according to one preview, though it called that too early to judge. A captain who wins the toss will have to read the grass cover and the moisture before choosing.

Scoring in New Zealand is usually lower than in India. That runs against how India have been playing, with Cricinfo’s squad page listing Abhishek Sharma at a strike rate above 218 across his last ten T20Is.

Recent record between the sides

History leans towards the visitors. India have won their last two bilateral T20I series in New Zealand and 16 of their 20 completed matches against the Black Caps since January 2020.

The most recent meetings were in 2026. India won the final on March 8 by 96 runs, making 255/5 to New Zealand’s 159, and took the first T20I of a January series by 48 runs.

Cricinfo’s form guide for the last five completed T20Is shows WLLLW for New Zealand and LWLWW for India, most recent first. Neither side arrives with a clear run of wins.

One personal landmark is in play. Ishan Kishan needs seven runs to pass Suryakumar Yadav’s 1,164 for the most T20I runs by an Indian in a calendar year.

Pressure on Shreyas Iyer

Iyer’s captaincy is the other storyline. Cricinfo says he was given elbow room after India lost series in Ireland and England in his first two captaincy assignments, after replacing the World-Cup-winning Suryakumar Yadav.

The same piece says that with the attention Indian cricket draws, Iyer will be under the scanner and will need runs off his own bat early. A series loss in New Zealand would add to the list of results people hold against him.

What comes next on the tour

The T20I leg runs through the start of November. Cricinfo’s schedule lists the third T20I in Wellington on October 27, the fourth in Auckland on October 30 and the fifth in Hamilton on November 1.

The ODIs start in Auckland on November 4. The tour also includes five ODIs and two Tests. The first Test is at the Basin Reserve in Wellington from November 19. Bumrah and Pant are named in India’s squad for that Test series.
