Manchester City started life in 1880 as St Mark's (West Gorton), changed its name to Ardwick and then became Manchester City in 1894. For most of the twentieth century it lived in the shadow of its neighbours across town. That changed after the 2008 takeover, which turned the club into a regular title contender.

Liverpool were created in 1892 after a dispute between Everton and the owner of Anfield, which left the ground without a tenant. John Houlding formed a new club to fill it, and the rest followed from there.

Arsenal began in 1886 as Dial Square, a works team of munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. They moved north to Highbury in 1913 and to the Emirates Stadium in 2006.

Manchester United were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR, a team formed by railway workers, and took their present name in 1902. Old Trafford has been their home since 1910, apart from a short spell after wartime bomb damage.

Chelsea were founded in 1905 at the Stamford Bridge athletics ground in west London, which the club has used ever since. The team had to be created to give the stadium a tenant, and the name came from the nearby borough.

Real Madrid were founded in 1902 and received the royal title Real from King Alfonso XIII in 1920. They play at the Santiago Bernabéu, named after the long-serving president who built the modern club.

Barcelona were founded in 1899 by a group led by the Swiss businessman Joan Gamper. The club's motto, Més que un club, means more than a club, and it reflects the role Barça has played in Catalan identity.

Bayern Munich were founded in 1900 and have been the dominant club in German football since the 1960s. They moved to the Allianz Arena in 2005, which glows red on match days.

Paris Saint-Germain were formed in 1970 through a merger, which makes them young by European standards. They have played at the Parc des Princes for most of their history.

Juventus were started in 1897 by a group of students in Turin. Their black and white stripes have been in use since 1903, and the club has been owned by the Agnelli family for most of the last century.

Inter were founded in 1908 after a group broke away from AC Milan, wanting the club to be open to foreign players. That is where the name Internazionale comes from.

Al Nassr were founded in 1955 in Riyadh and are one of the most successful clubs in Saudi Arabia. Their yellow and blue kit is known across the Gulf.

Inter Miami were awarded to a group led by David Beckham in 2018 and played their first MLS season in 2020. The club is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Pakistan played their first Test match in October 1952, against India in Delhi, five years after independence. The team has since produced some of the most exciting fast bowlers the game has seen, from Fazal Mahmood to Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar.

India played their first Test at Lord's in June 1932. The side has grown into one of the strongest in all three formats and has the biggest fan base in the sport.

Lahore Qalandars are one of the six teams in the Pakistan Super League and have played in the league since the first season in 2016. The Gaddafi Stadium is their home ground.

Karachi Kings are the PSL team from Pakistan's biggest city and play their home games at the National Stadium. They joined the league when it started in 2016.

Islamabad United were the first champions of the Pakistan Super League, winning the inaugural title in 2016. They also won in 2018, and again in 2024.

Mumbai Indians are one of the original eight Indian Premier League teams, formed in 2008. They play at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which also hosted the 2011 World Cup final.

Chennai Super Kings joined the Indian Premier League in 2008 and have one of the strongest fan followings in Indian sport. Their home ground is the MA Chidambaram Stadium, usually called Chepauk.

The Lakers began in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers and moved to Los Angeles in 1960. The name comes from Minnesota's lakes and was kept even after the move.

The Boston Celtics were one of the founding teams of the Basketball Association of America in 1946, the league that later became the NBA. They have played at the TD Garden since 1995.

The Warriors began in Philadelphia in 1946, moved to San Francisco in 1962 and then to Oakland in 1971. Since 2019 they have played at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

The Chiefs were founded in 1960 by Lamar Hunt as the Dallas Texans and moved to Kansas City in 1963. They play at Arrowhead Stadium, which is regularly named among the loudest in sports.

Scuderia Ferrari was founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 as a racing team and it is the only team that has entered every Formula 1 world championship season since 1950. The cars are built in Maranello.
